Course aim

To develop students' technical and compositional skills required for the successful capture and editing of digital photographic images; to provide a critical examination of the current practices of digital photography, its changing social, political and cultural roles, the contexts, platforms and modes of its consumption, and its ethical challenges.

Course content

This course will provide students with the skills necessary to produce quality digital photographic images using a range of equipment including cameras, mobile phones, and other handheld devices; introduce the fundamentals of composition, lighting, and editing with Adobe Lightroom alongside other widely available apps and programs; discuss the changing role of digital photography and critically examine the ethical issues of digital manipulation, AI and truth claims, privacy, and the continuing power of the image and authorship in ‘post-truth’ society.
