UO Crime Prevention

Course aim

This course aims to develop knowledge of crime prevention theories and techniques and critical analysis skills to evaluate crime prevention strategies and crime reduction programs. Students will be able to apply their knowledge and skills to make effective contributions to crime reduction in roles within their communities.

Course content

The concept of crime prevention incorporates strategies implemented by individuals, communities, businesses, non-government organisations and the criminal justice system (police, courts, corrections) in the targeting of social, cultural, economic and environmental factors that increase the risk of crime, antisocial behaviour and victimisation.

Drawing from a range of disciplines (geography, urban sociology, town planning, criminology) students will be able to differentiate between the main approaches to crime prevention that have developed internationally. Those approaches are: situational, developmental, community and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED).

Students will also critically analyse crime prevention theories and techniques to enable them to make effective contributions to crime reduction in their roles and within their communities.
