UO Sociological Perspectives

Course aim

To introduce students to significant issues and developments in sociological theory by examining the primary themes and works of major sociologists. To develop research skills in sociology which are needed to generate a sociological argument in written form.

Course content

In this introductory sociology course, students will learn about the various ways sociology involves theory construction and critical analysis. In addition to covering classical sociological perspectives, such as those produced by Marx, Weber, and Durkheim, the course introduces students to important theoretical debates within contemporary sociology, such as those concerning race, gender, capitalism, knowledge, and power.
