Course aim

To further develop students understanding of the nature of language through the investigation of the role language plays in the construction, interpretation and communication of media texts and the influence that media has on languages and their use.

Course content

The course will further develop students’ understanding of the ways in which language is used by the media in an era of global communication technologies to create messages and how the media themselves modify the ways in which languages are used in order to achieve communicative goals. Students will analyse how media discourse is created through language, the linguistic features of various types of spoken and written media texts, and how meaning is conveyed in the media through language and other semiotic systems. They will explore the ways that media has changed languages and in particular, the influence of new media on contemporary language practices.
