What it’s like to study Human Resources 100% online
UniSA Online HR student, Mica Chadun, has chosen to study a degree to move up the career ladder.
What were the personal and professional motivations to study your online degree?
Studying had been in the back of my mind for a year or so. I wanted to challenge myself and set myself apart from my colleagues. I’m at a stage in life where I felt studying would be manageable with my workload and I’m glad I found the perfect degree through UniSA Online.
I had engaged in on-the-job learning and had a mentor who encouraged me to further my studies. I had industry exposure and the next step in progressing my career was through learning. I also wanted to spend my time meaningfully and gain the skills to progress my career.
How will your degree help you achieve your career goals?
My UniSA Online degree will give me the framework and theory required to progress my career in the HR industry. I’ve moved from HR admin-based roles and am currently in an HR coordinator role, and now have ambitions of becoming an HR Adviser.
My degree will demonstrate to my current and future employers that I have the knowledge and commitment to go forward in this field. After I graduate, I would love to continue studying, it is such a fulfilling feeling, and a little addictive at times!

What kind of opportunities does studying 100% online give you?
Studying online has given me a great amount of flexibility. I can fit in full-time study while also working full-time. I can also access support services and online tutors at my convenience. I’ve found that I’ve been able to access more support than my previous experience at university, which was not online. All support services, online tutors and academic staff are only ever an email away.
Did you have any concerns before starting your degree?
I was concerned with the workload and learning how to study again. However, before the course, the Student Advisers were supportive, informative and transparent on the expectations. They provided a full-time study plan in conjunction with a part-time plan, in case I wasn’t able to commit myself to a full-time load. Before commencing the course, the Online Course Facilitators were supportive also, and the introductory course helps settle you in and outlines the expectations.

How have you been able to apply what you’ve learned in your degree to your daily role? Can you describe a specific scenario?
I am continuously able to relate the course work to my role! The high-level understanding I have of concepts, and my increased confidence to communicate and relate with managers has been so valuable. I have a greater understanding of the department, functions and how HR contributes to the overall business strategy.
If you could give your past self a few words of advice knowing what you do now, what would you say?
I would encourage myself to make the call a little sooner, and reassure myself that, with the support and information provided, I can achieve anything I want!
